Cape Abilities Receives Service Enterprise Certification from Points of Light!

Cape Abilities is pleased to announce that it has been certified by Points of Light, the world’s largest organization dedicated to volunteer service, as a Service Enterprise! Achieving Service Enterprise certification is a very prestigious accomplishment for an organization. In fact, organizations that certify join the top 11 percent of nonprofits nationwide in volunteer management and organizational performance. Certification signifies that organizations have the capability and management expertise to strategically use volunteers to improve the performance of their organization.

In addition to this prestigious recognition, the Points of Light program will use Cape Abilities’ Outcomes Statement as a Best Practice to share with their network, so that other non-profits can engage and retain volunteers at a level that matches Cape Abilities’ high standards and reputation.

“This certification will help us with sustainability for years come,” notes James Barnes, Director of Social Enterprise at Cape Abilities. “We’ve seen tremendous improvement across all of our businesses in revenue, and in the overall experience for our program participants; building a team of committed, caring volunteers was an important component in accomplishing that.”

Volunteers have always been an important part of the growth and success of Cape Abilities.  Since 2017, the number of our volunteers has increased 35% and they have volunteered 2700 more hours than the year prior.   As Cape Abilities has grown over the years, so has our need for volunteers and a need to properly recruit, vet, and retain this highly-valued staff.

“I am always mindful that the most important role volunteers play at Cape Abilities is to enhance the lives of the individuals we serve,” says Moira Swiatkowski, Volunteer Coordinator at Cape Abilities.  “When the volunteer is happy and engaged in their role, the quality of our programs overall are instantly improved.”

Cape Abilities completed an extensive assessment, over 20 hours of training and coaching, and an extensive internal planning and change process to better integrate volunteers into our human capital strategy. By achieving this level of excellence and certification, we are now better equipped to leverage the time and talent of volunteers and better meet our mission.

During this year long process, we made many changes and improvements to the Volunteer Program, including:

  • Hiring a Volunteer Coordinator
  • Creating New On-Boarding Guidelines
  • Revising the Volunteer Handbook and Application process
  • Improved Data Retention initiatives and Volunteer Recruitment Collateral

Cape Abilities is honored and proud to be recognized and certified by Points of Light as a Service Enterprise.   We celebrate our volunteers; selfless individuals who give everything they have to improve the quality of life for our participants every day.

Please, come and join us today!
